Learning at Lancing

At Lancing, pupils are taught by subject specialists, with different subjects taking place in designated classrooms. A five-minute break between lessons allows time for movement around the school. Both classwork and Evening School assignments are regularly marked. Each half term, pupils receive a short summative report assessing their achievement and effort in every subject, which is made available to parents via the Parent Portal.

To recognise academic effort and excellence, Merits are awarded for work demonstrating particular dedication. Outstanding work may earn a Distinction, and the very best submissions may receive a Head Master’s Commendation.

Subject Clinics

Academic departments offer additional support through Subject Clinics, which run outside lesson times in the afternoons alongside the co-curricular programme. With over 70 clinics per week, covering the full range of subjects, pupils can seek extra help, reinforce learning, or receive individualised guidance.

Given the breadth of academic support available at Lancing, we strongly advise against additional online tutoring. However, if parents feel there is a particular need, we encourage them to discuss this first with their child’s Housemaster or Housemistress before making any arrangements.

The Tutorial System

Tutors play a key role in helping pupils manage their academic workload, guiding them in planning school work and ensuring they allocate sufficient time to each subject each week. While some pupils adapt quickly to these organisational skills, others may need more support, and tutors provide tailored guidance to help them develop these essential habits. Tutors are allocated in Third Form and when pupils reach Sixth Form they can stick with their current tutor or nominate another member of staff to be their Tutor.

Alongside academic planning, tutors also discuss the previous week’s co-curricular activities, sports, concerts, and other events, ensuring a well-rounded approach to school life. They work closely with Housemasters and Housemistresses to ensure pupils are settling in well, making friends, and fully engaging in the Lancing community.

One-to-one tutorials take place weekly, providing a dedicated time for academic reflection and progress tracking. However, tutors are always available throughout the week to offer support and guidance as needed. These sessions focus primarily on academic achievements, using Lancing’s internal progress tracking system to monitor development. If parents have any concerns about their child’s progress, they are encouraged to discuss them directly with the child’s Housemaster or Housemistress who will liaise with the child’s tutor on the best route of support.
