Pupil Voice & Leadership
We strongly believe in empowering pupils to have a voice in shaping their school experience and to provide them with opportunities to exercise leadership and advocacy. Year Councils (which span all the year groups and onto which pupils are elected by their Houses) meet half-termly, with their proposals taken to the full School Council, chaired by the Head Master. Significant initiatives, such as the creation of a school Café, the extension of morning break, expanding the gym, creating a new dance studio, and installing water fountains, have been driven by pupil suggestions.
Pupil representation is part of the DNA of the school, and is possible from the Third Form to the Upper Sixth. It reaches into all aspects of Lancing life, from the Teaching and Learning pupil committees, which meet with the academic leadership of the school to discuss pupils’ experience of learning, to the Food Committee, which works closely with the Catering department to ensure a varied and balanced offering which is healthy, varied and ticks the boxes of pupil favourites. The IT committee liaises between pupils and key staff; the Green Group champions and drives sustainability issues and the Lower Sixth Charity Committee shapes, manages and galvanises the Lent Term’s charitable focus, raising impressive sums annually for pupil-chosen charities.
Through roles like Sports Leaders, CCF officers posts, House Captains and Prefects, pupils lead their peers and work closely with staff. Our team of Student Library Assistants supervise the Library for parts of the week, the Peer Supporters are key to the pastoral care of fellow pupils and all these roles enable students to hone skills, to plan and bring events or activities to fruition and to play an active role in influencing school policies and initiatives.
