School Uniform

The purpose of the Lancing uniform is to:

• Liberate students from the pressure to dress or look a particular way.
• Promote a studious, purposeful academic environment where the focus is on learning.
• Foster a sense of belonging and pride in the College and its mission.

General Rules for All Pupils:

Students are expected to be smartly dressed at all times. All students must choose between Uniform A or Uniform B detailed in the lists in the next column:

• Timings: school uniform is to be worn from breakfast until the 17.55 roll-call.
• Sports kit: may be worn after lessons have finished and if a student is attending sport/games. It may not be worn in lessons or Chapel unless specifically directed by staff, in which case full sports kit should be worn. No shorts are permitted in formal places such as lessons or Chapel.
• Home clothes: acceptable after 17.55 roll-call, after lunch on Saturdays and throughout Sundays unless attending a formal occasion.
• Shoes: must be formal in style and made of leather that can be polished. In the Third to Fifth Form, they should be formal black leather shoes. In the Sixth Form, they may be formal black or brown leather shoes. Shoes must be kept well-polished.
• Blazers: must be worn whenever in school uniform.
• Hair: must be neat and tidy, with natural colour and without extremes of fashion. Those with long hair may be asked to tie it back in lessons or activities.
• Facial hair: students must be clean shaven.
• Jewellery: Third to Fifth Form, a confirmation chain and one small stud in the lobe of each ear may be worn. In the Sixth Form, modest amounts of jewellery may be worn including a confirmation chain or other sign of faith, such as signet ring, and one small earring in each ear lobe. No large or ostentatious jewellery is permitted.
• Makeup: may not be worn in Third– Fifth Form. Modest amounts of makeup may be worn in the Sixth Form.
• Cold weather: the following are optional for all pupils:
  • Overcoat: formal, plain, dark [the school shop stocks these]
  • Scarf: College scarf only
