Lancing Life
Lancing College has five boys’ Houses, four girls’ Houses, and one co-ed House, all accommodating students from Years 9 to 13 (Third Form to Upper Sixth). Each House (whether day or boarding) serves as a home base where pupils live, study, and form lasting friendships. It is also where they take on increasing responsibilities and play a role in decision-making within the school community.
The Housemaster or Housemistress is responsible for leading the House, ensuring the wellbeing, happiness, and academic progress of all pupils under their care. They play a key role in helping pupils settle into life at Lancing and are always available for guidance and support. They are your primary contact. Assisting them is the Assistant Housemaster or Housemistress, who takes on House responsibilities in their absence.
The House Matron, assisted by a team of Domestic Assistants, plays a vital role in pupil welfare. They oversee health and wellbeing, laundry, and day-to-day pastoral support, always offering a listening ear—whether for concerns, achievements, or simply a friendly chat.
Every pupil is assigned a Tutor from the House Tutor team. Tutors meet with their pupils weekly to discuss academic progress, review Evening School, and provide guidance on studies. They also assist in planning a well-rounded co-curricular programme. Specific Tutors are designated to oversee different year groups, ensuring tailored support throughout a pupil’s time at Lancing.
In the Lower Sixth, pupils have the opportunity to select a Tutor from among the staff who teach them or specialise in their chosen subjects. This transition takes place in October.
Each House is further supported by a team of senior pupils in leadership roles, including the Head of House, Deputy Head of House, House Captains, School Prefects, and Peer Supporters, all of whom serve as mentors and role models within the House.
All pupils play an active role in their House community. Each year group takes part in a rota of responsibilities, which may include keeping communal areas tidy, assisting with recycling, or helping to supervise younger pupils.
Beyond House duties, there are plenty of opportunities for leadership and representation throughout the school. Pupils can represent their House or Year in a Year Council or School Council, join pupil-led committees such as Food, Teaching and Learning, Charities and IT, or get involved in initiatives such as the Green Group, or Peer Supporters. Many also take on leadership roles by captaining sports teams, leading clubs, or running societies.
Your child will be introduced to these opportunities as they settle in, and our advice is simple: embrace them, get involved, and make the most of everything Lancing has to offer.
Laundry
All laundry is completed in House by our Matrons and Domestic Assistants.
Please ensure all items of uniform and non-uniform are clearly labelled. In addition, they should be machine-washable and suitable for tumble-drying.
